7 Micro Trends in Interior Design in 2024
There are global trends that indicate changes in ecology, technology, culture and society. These include, for example, responsible consumption, a trend that seeks to cover all areas of human activity. There are trends of a lower order, they can be conditionally called macro trends, they are not so comprehensive, but they are influential.
Macrotrends include paint brands’ love of neutral tones or the fashion wave that swept through interior design in the 70s. Macrotrends live long, evolve, and adapt. And there are very small trends, often called microtrends. It’s hard to predict the timing of their lives, but it’s also hard not to notice them. We’ve compiled a fashion guide for the most notable microtrends for 2025.
Tinted glass
Plates, vases, sculptures, lampshades, coffee table legs, room dividers – all of these can be made of colored glass in 2025. Since the trend is mainly about decor, it is very easy to integrate it into the interior. Fall in Love with Microcement, the Most Demanded Material for Decorating a Home
Understanding trends is only half the battle, you also need to know where to find them.
The name of the new style comes from the French word “rocaille”, which can be literally translated as “pebble” or “piece of stone”. Initially, this was the name given to the peculiar stucco ornaments made of pebbles and seashells, which could be seen on the walls of the “caves” – pavilions of the French palace parks. The interiors of the cool pavilions were stylized as caves, where ladies and gentlemen hid from the heat on summer evenings. Later, rocaille began to be called a stucco ornament resembling a seashell curl. This element became the main feature of Rococo.
Not only color novelties from collections of fashion brands, but also vintage relics look relevant. So feel free to put your grandmother's colored glass glasses on the table.
It is difficult to say how long the trend will last, for example, the fashion for colored mirrors flew away and never took root in Russian interiors.
Architectural motifs
The boundaries between art, fashion, architecture and interior design have always been blurred. This year’s rising trend in architectural motifs is another confirmation of this.
Arches, stuccoes, columns, statues, caryatids and facades of city buildings appear in carpets, textiles and wallpapers. Both hyperrealistic and conditional images are important.
Kitchen in bright colors
Among the kitchen macro trends, the most striking was the tendency to turn the kitchen into a continuation of the living room, “taking” from it traditional kitchen elements: panels, handles, aprons, and display cases.
The imitation of the kitchen with the living space is still relevant. But the headset does not necessarily strive for invisibility, merging with the walls. Following the popularity of color blocking, designers are experimenting with kitchen modules in rich, complex shades.
An important point: a bright kitchen is in fashion, but only if it is not glossy.
Mixing metals
We used to try to make sure that the fittings, lamps, faucets and other metal elements were presented in a single tone. If it is brass, then just brass. If it is bronze, then the bronze age in the whole apartment. Designers decided to go the other way and assumed that mixing different metals in one space is not only possible, but also fashionable. Agree, such microtrends make life easier.
Vertical flooring
So you can lay a trendy narrow tile or in a traditional way. Designers claim that this technique allows you to visually raise the ceiling and stretch the walls. Or maybe they are a little bored with the classic horizontal style.
Wallpaper in the bathroom
Bathrooms, like kitchens, are less like technical rooms and more like living rooms. In modern design projects in bathrooms you can find chandeliers, dining chairs, dressers, carpets, indoor plants, paintings and wallpapers. At least, the Russian customer is trusted by the latter. You want to make repairs once and for all, and wallpaper in a wet area certainly does not seem like a durable choice.
In fact, if the wall does not interact directly with water, you can safely stick waterproof wallpaper that can survive the collision with small splashes and condensation.
If you are not mentally prepared for classic wallpaper in the bathroom, try extra washable fiberglass wallpaper. They can definitely be trusted.
Low sofas
At the beginning of the article we talked about nostalgia for the 70s of the last century, which has not been able to give up modern designers for a long time. This trend has given rise to many microtrends. One of the most interesting are low modular sofas.
A STYLE THAT PLAYS IN THE INTERIOR
The trend is eclecticism, individualization of space and bold experiments. It's all about the Memphis style. We'll find out where it comes from, how it looks and what it “eats” with in modern interiors.
Some microtrends live for several seasons, others settle in the hearts of consumers and stay with us for a long time (remember the palm leaves on the wallpaper), and some even become the starting point for macrotrends. Who is who – time will tell. But durability is not the main thing in fashion. The main thing is that trends cheer you up.
