Tiled bathrooms: inside or outside? Decide for yourself!
Tiled bathrooms: inside or outside? Decide for yourself! Tiled bathrooms have long been the absolute ultimate. Those times are over, because now there are modern design variations that are different from the old fashion. But is this really true?
Tiled bathrooms: timelessness for the bathroom
In the past, tiles were considered the most durable and long-lasting option. After the mandatory ten years, it was not necessary to renovate the bathroom, because tiles and mirrors last much longer when professionally installed. Nothing has changed to this day, but the demands of bathroom owners have become much more sophisticated.
It is no longer just about timelessness and durability, today fashion principles play a completely new role. As an alternative to classic tile mirrors, wood laminates or impregnated boards are also popular, or different wall designs are combined, as seen in the picture here:

Today's fashion certainly combines the demands of a certain timelessness, because the trendy light gray, black and dark gray shades of tiles will still be modern in a few years. They have the advantage that they can be wonderfully combined with the furniture in the bathroom. A few more decorative items have been installed, a wall has been repainted: the new bathroom is ready!
Despite all the timelessness, the comfort in the bathroom should not be abandoned, a point where tiled bathrooms cannot compete with a cheap color option. Because completely tiled floors, tiled walls and the white of bathroom ceramics create a cold, uncomfortable impression. Here you either need to work with smart lighting or use rugs or other decorative bathroom textiles. For example, it is much easier to use planks in the bathroom, as shown in this picture:
Such boards give a rustic impression, are warm and pleasant, but easy to maintain and durable.

Tiled bathrooms: naturalness is key
Whether the tiled walls in the bathroom are inside or outside is up to everyone. But there is one thing: Naturalness has also entered the bathroom and is reflected, among other things, in the structured matt tiled floors. In some cases, bare feet feel like they are walking on a wooden floor, but a floor designed in this way has the advantage of being solid and easy to maintain like a tiled floor. Matt tile varieties have the advantage of being less slippery, which significantly increases the safety factor in the bathroom. This takes into account the claim of barrier-free living, where the highest possible level of safety is important.
Naturalness is also ensured with different tile sizes. Gone are the days when the largest possible formats were used to fill a wall or floor in a cost-effective way. It is about individuality and variety, and therefore the shower is tiled differently than the area around the bathtub or the toilet. This creates different areas in the bathroom. However, thanks to the different tile formats, it is possible to lay quickly and cheaply, as the choice of tile options is truly enormous. There are even models with dimensions of 1.5 x 3 m, which make a clear difference from the small mosaic tiles of 2 x 2 cm.
However, it is important to remember that the size of the bathroom should be the same as the size of the tiles, although the old rule that only small tiles belong in small bathrooms no longer applies. A small room can appear significantly larger with large format tile mirrors. However, their installation depends on the skill of the tiler, who really needs to know something about their craft.
In addition to current trends, new installation forms for tiled bathrooms can be seen.
New shapes for tiled bathrooms
In addition to current trends, new installation forms for tiled bathrooms can be seen. Small tile models are no longer conservative, but rather hip and are often used in an elongated form. They resemble the clinker bricks that currently lead living trends.
Also previously it was expected that wall tiles in tiled bathrooms should be laid in rows with the joints always forming a cross. Today, the specialist tends to use band laying, where the tiles can be laid in staggered order. They loosen up the entire room and create an elegant impression. This is particularly suitable for natural stone tiles.
Five or six-sided tiles are also on the rise, they can be placed on the wall in the shape of a flower. These models are even available in patterned versions that look quite fun.

Tile bathrooms and alternatives to the tile tradition
Tiled bathrooms may be practical, but there are now many alternatives to traditional tiles. It is important to remember that when bathing or showering, high levels of humidity are released and splashes of water repeatedly hit the walls and floors. Walls and floors need to be well protected to prevent long-term damage to the building structure and to prevent mould from forming.
This should be taken into account when looking for an alternative to tiles. Therefore, it is not possible to bring one color to the wall and enjoy the variety in the bathroom. Instead, colors that are particularly water-repellent and mold-resistant should be chosen. And there are exactly such alternatives:
They look deceptively real and look like wood, metal or stone. The PVC comes on the floor, a carrier layer is glued onto it, which shows the decor. On top of that comes a transparent layer as protection and sealing. Of course, the individual layers do not have to be laid yourself, PVC floor coverings are already available on the market. They are very thin and therefore also suitable for application on existing floors.
Cork is available in various board sizes and is notable for its easy accessibility. If cork flooring is professionally installed and edge protection is provided, water from the shower or splashes from the sink cannot cause any damage.
Wood is well protected thanks to modern technologies and is therefore also suitable for wet rooms. It does not swell, but must be installed properly. It is important that there are no joints: a flooring specialist should be consulted here.
Plastered walls in the bathroom are also possible, as seen in the picture:
Stucco on walls is particularly suitable for the industrial look that has recently found its way into bathrooms.
However, it makes a great impression; The plaster on the walls is particularly suitable for the industrial look that has recently also found its way into the bathroom.
On the walls, plaster replaces tiled bathrooms – examples of this can be found above all in modern hotels. Mineral plasters or stone spatulas of different grain sizes are used. A synthetic resin binds the materials together and forms a breathable and moisture-resistant wall covering. This variant is applied directly to old wall coverings, making it easier to renovate old bathrooms.
Wall coverings and wall panels are available in the market in different designs and sizes as well as in different formats and materials.
Apply wall covering: renovate tiled bathrooms
Many homeowners or apartment owners are afraid to renovate their tiled bathrooms because they know that the old tiled mirror in the bathroom has to be knocked off the walls. With modern materials and wall coverings, this is no longer necessary, as they can even be installed directly in tiled bathrooms. It is only important that the surface is dry and clean, and also solid. This means that there is no new coating to be glued onto loose tiles!
This is an inexpensive option for those who see their bathroom as a spa rather than a wet room and want to renovate in between. It is fast, cheap and even possible in different design variants, so that even traditional joints can create a flawless wall design. Wall coverings and wall panels are available on the market in different designs and sizes as well as in different formats and materials.
It is important that the panels are waterproof and colorfast, otherwise the renovation effect will quickly fade. They are glued to the wall using silicone and the panels themselves are measured and laid. In some cases, glass panels are now even available for attaching to old tile mirrors: the safety glass is tinted for this and can then cover the unsightly wall tiles.
In general, these variants are a nice alternative for tiled bathrooms that need to be renovated or renovated. Such alternatives should also be considered when building new bathrooms. The truth is that tiled bathrooms will never completely disappear, because they actually offer unrivaled advantages. In combination with the right lighting, timeless dream bathrooms of all kinds are created!
