Why choose a latex mattress: strengths and weaknesses
Opinions about latex mattresses are many and varied, but are they all true?
In this article, we aim to shed some light on this topic. latex mattress and to determine its strengths and weaknesses. A comparison will be made with its main “competitors”, memory mattress and spring mattress.
How to make a latex mattress
There are two types of latex mattresses: synthetic and this natural.
In this article we decided to consider only natural latex, as synthetic latex is qualitatively worse. Synthetic latex foam is less elastic and less durable.
Natural latex is obtained from the rubber tree (botanical name Hevea brazilian). It gets its name from its milky white color. The resin extracted from a tropical tree is mixed with a liquid consisting mostly of water. Air is added to the resulting mixture to create a foam.
In fact, it is latex foam. Soft, elastic, comfortable. This is what is used for the filling of the mattress after undergoing processes that include the addition of sulfur.
Opinions about latex mattresses spread
By doing a quick search on the internet, we understand that opinions about natural latex mattresses focus on three aspects:
- The comfort of support offered by latex, which perfectly supports our body and then returns to its original shape when the bed is not in use.
- Danger of mold and mildew formation, especially since latex is exposed to moisture
- Memory foam mattresses are preferred over latex because they require less maintenance for equal comfort.
Often, a single example of a manufacturing company becomes a common opinion that leads to a general belief about a certain product that does not always correspond to the truth. Therefore, it is better to do a good research on a certain product before understanding if it is the right product for us, especially when it comes to mattresses.
How much truth is there in these most common opinions about latex mattresses? Let's find out together.
What are the real flaws of a latex mattress?
Two factors can be included among the “problems” of the latex mattress. Let’s consider them one by one.
Although latex is a product that is stated to be hypoallergenic, it is not completely hypoallergenic as it is not susceptible to bacteria and mites. For example, it is not good for those who are allergic to latex.
Latex mattresses (especially quality ones) are extremely comfortable and healthy for our backs, but their maintenance requires some care. They need to be aired frequently to prevent moisture from accumulating inside.
Advantages of latex mattress
Latex mattresses have very important advantages, so it is useful to take them into consideration when choosing a mattress.
It is a latex material which is a 100% natural material. hypoallergenicwhere neither bacteria nor mites nest.
Latex foam is highly elastica, so that it supports our weight, follows the shape of our body perfectly and returns to its original shape when not in use.
It is also a material breathableThis means they allow air to circulate inside the bed, keeping the temperature constant at all times (unlike memory foam, which tends to warm up on contact with our bodies), so they’re perfect for all seasons.
Latex, memory and springs in comparison
Many prefer a memory foam mattress to a latex one, not to mention the more traditionalists who do not abandon the loyalty of springs.
The comparison is made by comparing the first two first of all, as they are more similar in terms of body support. Similar, but not the same.
In fact, if both manage to adapt perfectly to the physical structure of the person they host, they do not have the same flexibility. That is, the memory takes longer to adapt to the body (on average it takes a few weeks) and is slower to recover and replace the host, returning to its original shape when no longer in use. On the contrary, the latex mattress has the advantage of great flexibility, adapting immediately to the user and regaining its original shape every morning.
It is also true that a memory foam mattress requires less maintenance than a latex mattress and is free from the danger of mold and mildew. It is also completely and utterly hypoallergenic.
As for the better breathability of latex compared to the polyurethane of memory foam, it is true that in principle there can be no comparison between the two. However, some high-quality memory mattresses reach the same latex levels.
As always, it all depends on the quality of the product and the manufacturer.
One thing is certain: The latex mattress represents the agility of springs and the comfort of memory foam.
